Off the Beaten Trail

“Off the Beaten Trail” acrylic

How do I wander?
Off the beaten trail.
How do I wonder?
Right brain will prevail.

I know my mind.
Back door I find.

With intuition I conclude.
Numbers elude.

How do I wander?
With gratitude.
How do I wonder?
Rainbow hued.

(At the time the painting was completed, the bridge from Windsor, Ohio, was closed to cars and accessible to foot traffic only. It has since been rebuilt and is now open to traffic.)

Habitat 2011

“Habitat” acrylic

Here I sit in my garden
Looking out…pardon
I can’t.

Blocked
By gourd vine hedge mess
Out of control, humongous
By tomato record high
Reaching for the sky

Surrounded
By low growing flower
Filled with color power
Spilling over the walk
More than a single stalk

Silence
Broken by bird sings
Broken by hummingbird wings

Next year
I will plant different
Every year I vow
Mistakes will be new
Time will tell how

This year
I’ll enjoy
My habitat

(This was my garden last year. It is much less out of control this year.)

Although you can’t see then in the small image, hidden in the picture are creatures: squirrel, cardinal, butterfly, ladybug, ants, hummingbird, hawk, dragonfly, bumblebee.

Storm Rolling In

"Storm Rolling In" - watercolor

We watched…

            over the lake

                        angry clouds pass

We saw…

            Suddenly . . .

                        wind shift

We stared…

            mesmerized by

                        the awesome beast

We ran…

chased by monster

                        head for cover

We looked…

out window

torrential rain

We gasped…

            small trees blowing

                        Tall trees falling

We sighed…

            black beast departed

                        calm restored

We were amazed…

            Destructive force

                        size of fallen trees

We thanked

            God

everyone was safe

We remember…

            a Friday evening

                        at Dunkirk Camp
